NAMING GUIDE

A conflict we must deal with everyday is naming. At least, if you are a creative Pokemon player it is. Do you want unique nicknames for your Pokemon? Well, keep reading! Having trouble naming your fakemon? Again, keep on going. This is a basic guide on how to find a name for your love Poke/Fake mon.

Translations

A good way to name your Pokemon is to use words from different languages. For example, if you have a Solrock, find out what "sun" means in a different language. If you like the word, you can give it that name. In this instance, you could use the German word, "sole".

This works for naming your fakemon as well. Just find a feature about them, or maybe their type, and translate it. For example, I have an insect fakemon named Purrekt. The name is derived from the German word, purpurrotes insekt, which means "purple insect."

For translations, go to Babelfish.

Japanese Names

Since Pokemon is a Japanese product, a Japanese name would be good for your virtual creature. Of course, few of us know Japanese, so naming something in that language is hard to do. That is why many people just make the name seem Japanese. For example, Kurashi, or Yasokiru. If I asked, you would say they were Japanese, wouldn't you? Well, they're not, I made them up. =P Here are simple things to help you make up Japanese names:

Suffix (end of word, for example the suffix of Kurashi is ashi)
ashi
uto
iru
chan
kan
imi
imu
kazi

Just be sure that the part of the name before the suffix flows, somewhat. ;)

Reference Names

There are many names that obviously go with a Pokemon. For instance, you could name a Sneasel "Claws". These names refer to an obvious feature of the Pokemon. Here are some examples of reference names:

Sharp/Clawed Pokemon
Claws
Blade
Scythe
Swords
Swiper

Cute/Fuzzy/Adorable Pokemon (please shoot me for typing these...)
Fuzz
Cuddles
Huggies
Pampers
Snookims
Wuv
Love
Doll

Dark/Evil Pokemon
Death
Darkness
Cruel
Smitten
Dark Angel
Forgotten

Symbolism

These are the less obvious reference names. They refer to a trait that can be reached, but is not quite physical. Examples include:

Celebi--Wisdom (because it is ancient)
Lugia--Faith (because it is the savior in Pokemon the Movie 2000)
Mew--Breath (because Mew is the creator, and breath symbolizes being born)
Ditto--Infinity (because it can become any Pokemon)
Eevee--Trinity (in R/B/Y, it has three evolutions)

Of course, you can even go as far as adding translations. For example, you could translate Wisdom to a different language to name your Celebi.

Closing

Do not feel limited to these naming methods, they are just guidelines. Be creative, and your friends will be jealous of your mad naming skillz! (skills)
