EVOLUTION GUIDE

Most Pokémon can evolve, or move on to the next stage of their life. There are many methods of doing this, leveling up, stones, and more. Then again, some Pokémon can't evolve. Maybe they're stubborn, or maybe they have fractured growth plates. The world will never know. But as for the ones that can, here are some methods of how to do so.

Leveling Up

This is the classic way of evolving. The trainer takes his/her Pokémon into the wild, gains experience points, and grows. When the Pokémon reaches a certain level, it will evolve into the next form.

Stones

Pokémon may also evolve by coming in contact with a certain stone. It depends on the Pokémon and the stone to which Pokémon you result with. There are various stones, and they are:

Fire Stone -- Growlithe into Arcanine, Vulpix into Ninetales, Eevee into Flareon.
Thunder Stone -- Pikachu into Raichu, Eevee into Jolteon.
Water Stone -- Eevee into Vaporeon, Lombre into Ludicolo, Poliwhirl into Poliwrath, Shellder into Cloyster, Staryu into Starmie.
Leaf Stone -- Exeggcute into Exeggutor, Gloom into Vileplume, Nuzleaf into Shiftry, Weepinbell into Victreebel.
Sun Stone -- Gloom into Bellossom, Sunkern into Sunflora
Moon Stone -- Clefairy into Clefable, Jigglypuff into Wigglytuff, Nidorin(a/o) into Nido (queen/king), Skitty into Delcatty.
Dawn Stone -- Male Kirlia into Gallade, Female Snorunt into Froslass.
Dusk Stone -- Murkrow into Hunchkrow, Misdreavous into Mismagius.
Shiny Stone -- Togetic into Togekiss, Roselia into Roserade

There are some Pokémon that change types depending on which stone you use, but most will be the same.

Everstone

One stone that doesn't evolve your Pokémon is the Everstone. On the contrary, it actually stops your Pokémon from evolving. When holding this item, your Pokémon will not evolve when the correct specifications are achieved. This is a great item to use when trying to evolve Eevee into Espeon/Umbreon.

Trading / Items

There are some Pokémon who need to be traded to evolve. Once you trade, it will evolve and your friend will have it. [if they are nice, they will give it back ;) ] There are only a few Pokémon that evolve this way, which are:

Haunter
Machocke
Kadabra
Graveler

Some Pokémon need to be holding a certain item when you trade them. This usually changes their type, but not in all cases. For example, trading a Scyther that is holding Metal Coat will result in a Scizor. These Pokémon evolve with this method:

Slowpoke (Kings Rock -- Slowking)
Scyther (Metal Coat -- Scizor)
Onix (Metal Coat -- Steelix)
Seadra (Dragon Scale -- Kingdra)
Porygon (Upgrade -- Porygon2)
Poliwhirl (Kings Rock -- Politoed)
Clamperl (Deepseatooth -- Huntail)
Clamperl (Deepseascale -- Gorebyss)
Rhydon (Protector -- Rhyperior)
Electabuzz (Electrizer -- Electivire)
Magmar (Magmarizer -- Magmortar)
Porygon2 (Dubious Disc -- PorygonZ)
Dusclops (Reaper Cloth -- Dusknoir)

Tameness / Happiness

There is a level of happiness that can be achieved by a Pokémon. Some Pokémon will evolve when it reaches a certain level. You can make a Pokémon happy by letting it battle a lot, giving it items to hold, using items on it, putting it in the first slot of your party, and giving it haircuts. The Pokemon are as follows:

Budew -- Happy + Daytime
Chingling -- Happy + Nighttime
Riolu -- Happy + Daytime

A Pokemon with specifications to this method is Eevee. [See bottom of page]

Gender-Effected Evolution

Some Pokemon evolve based on what gender they are. Female Pokemon evolve into one Pokemon, and males into another. Some Pokemon have two evolutions, one available to both genders and one only available to one gender. Here are those evolutions.

>>BURMY
Female -- Wormadam
Male -- Mothib

>>COMBEE
Female -- Vespiquen
Male -- Doesn't Evolve

>>KIRLIA
Female -- Gardevoir
Male (w/Dawn Stone) -- Gallade

>>SNORUNT
Female (w/Dawn Stone) -- Froslass
Male -- Glalie

Attached Items

A few Pokemon evolve when they are holding a specific item and level up. They are as follows:

Happiny + Oval Stone (DayTime) -- Chansey
Gligar + Razor Fang (NightTime) -- Gliscor
Sneasel + Razor Claw (NightTime) -- Weavile

Other Methods

There are a few Pokemon that evolve in other ways. The newest way, in the region of Hoenn with the third generation Pokemon, is with the newly acquired "feels". These are increased using Pokeblocks. The different feels are:

Beauty
Cool
Tough
Cute
Smart

Milotic

In order to obtain Milotic, you must catch the hideous Feebas. Once you catch it, increase its beauty to an amazing amount. Then, it will evolve into Milotic.

Eevee

Eevee is the evolution Pokémon. There are currently five different choices as evolutions. They evolve by stone or by tameness. These Pokémon are:

Jolteon (Thunder Stone)
Vaporeon (Water Stone)
Flareon (Fire Stone)
Espeon (Tameness*)
Umbreon (Tameness*)
Leafeon (moss rock + level up)
Glaceon (ice rock + level up)

*To be even more unique, Eevee must also be evolved at a certain time of day. In order to obtain Espeon, Eevee must reach its desired happiness during the daytime. For Umbreon, this must occur during the night.

Why Should I?

But the younger Pokémon are so cute! Yes, we all know this. [consider Feebas, though] There are some extras to evolving you Pokémon. First off, their stats increase. Sometimes they decrease, though. For example, a Scyther that evolves into a Scizor loses a lot of speed. On the plus side, the defense and attack increase. For battling purposes, these is a major plus. But, the younger evolutions often learn their moves a the earlier levels. They also have different move sets, though the choices are usually better at older stages. In the end, whether to evolve your Pokémon or not is your decision.
